Quite a few people have been asking us what we’ve been calling the baby during the pregnancy. Since we won’t even know the gender for at least another month or two, it’s a little early for us to start seriously considering what to eventually name the little one. That said, it feels weird to call him/her “it,” and “baby” sounds too generic. When we first found out I was pregnant, Dan just jokingly referred to it as “zygote” during the early stages. (I know — how geeky, right?)
Since then, however, we’ve been getting weekly pregnancy updates from sites like BabyCenter and TheBump as well as from Kaiser Permanente’s weekly pregnancy e-newsletter, and each give an overview of how the fetus is growing and changing that week, as well as about how large it has gotten in size. The funny thing is that these e-newsletters often use fruits and vegetables as a visual comparison of the size of the developing baby. (You can see an overall timeline here.)Â We thought it was cute, and started adopting the fruit/vegetable of the week as the nickname. So the name changes every week, but it’s been fun for us to update the name weekly, and it has also been a helpful reminder of how much our baby has grown. As of Friday, it’s a lemon, at 14 weeks. Last week it was a peach, and before that a plum, and prior to that a lime, and so on….
Our conversations over the past couple of months have regularly included comments like “Has the olive been behaving?” and “The plum looks more like you from the ultrasound.” It made me chuckle the other day to get a text message from Dan saying, “I’m going grocery shopping for you and the peach. What do you guys want to eat?” We know that our nicknaming system is pretty dorky, and we’re not sure how much our unborn baby appreciates it, but we have to find some way to entertain ourselves during these long 9-10 months, right? So there you have it — this week, you can call it “lemon.”

hahahaha! this is so cute! despite the fact that I find the concept of something INSIDE you exponentially growing in size absolutely horrifying….this is why you guys will be great parents and I am not qualified to babysit a bar of soap.
October 10, 2010 @ 8:03 pm
hahaha* It’s a little scary for me to see how it’s going to get exponentially bigger for me, too! It’ll be nice when we can actually give it a real name!
October 10, 2010 @ 7:40 pm
i love it!! this is soooo adorable, and its good to see youre having fun with the pregnancy~! you two are gonna be the cutest parents =)))))
October 10, 2010 @ 8:03 pm
Thanks! I hope you’re right!
October 10, 2010 @ 7:41 pm
not gonna lie though, it freaks me out to think it will be the size of a watermelon @ the end!! yikes!!
October 10, 2010 @ 8:03 pm
You’re right, it’s cute while it’s still a lemon but it’s pretty daunting to see how huge it’s gonna get….
October 10, 2010 @ 7:50 pm
awww so cute!! you two are going to be GREAT parents! I can’t wait <3
October 10, 2010 @ 8:03 pm
Thank you! I’ll need to get lots of tips from you! How many months is Evan now?
October 10, 2010 @ 8:09 pm
evan just turned three months!
October 10, 2010 @ 8:09 pm
I can’t wait to see your cute baby :]
October 11, 2010 @ 12:26 pm
Aww, he must be super cute! I can’t wait to see mine, too!
October 10, 2010 @ 8:10 pm
That is so cute!!! I didn’t even realize until you mentioned it how they do describe the baby’s size and weight by comparing him/her to fruits! I’m currently carrying a honeydew melon and starting Friday, a watermelon! Lol
October 11, 2010 @ 12:26 pm
Yup, Dan and I were looking at the overall timeline in The Bump magazine that my cousin gave us, and we were wondering, “Why are they all fruits and veggies?” haha* I can’t believe you’re already at honeydew/watermelon! I wish I could see you right now! I don’t think I’ve ever seen any of my close friends when they were that far along.
October 10, 2010 @ 8:19 pm
Oh, Misono! You guys are so funny!!:) haha, made me laugh to read your post 🙂 Especially Dan’s comment grocery shopping! hilarious!
October 11, 2010 @ 12:32 pm
Thanks! Dan’s text made me laugh too! It’s become such a regular part of our daily conversations that we don’t even really think twice about it anymore, except when we have to switch to a new fruit at the end of every week.
I had so much fun with you on Friday! Let’s get together again soon. 🙂
October 10, 2010 @ 8:38 pm
I think it’s pretty damn cute. 🙂 You guys are going to be fantastic parents!!
October 11, 2010 @ 12:32 pm
Aww thanks Rumi!
I hope you’re right! 🙂
October 11, 2010 @ 8:07 am
you guys truly warm my heart – what a fabulous post to wake up to this morning 🙂
October 11, 2010 @ 12:33 pm
Aww Megumi I miss you so much already! I really have to find an excuse to go visit you in LA sometime soon. Hope you’re settling in well! ♥
October 11, 2010 @ 9:07 am
awww I don’t think it sounds geeky at all!!! it’s absolutely adorable! but i do think zygote is pretty cool too 😀
October 11, 2010 @ 12:34 pm
“Zygote” did work for a while, but then once it started growing more, it wasn’t technically accurate anymore… lol.
When are you going to France? Am I going to see you over the holidays? 😀
October 11, 2010 @ 12:04 pm
If you continue with this naming scheme, you’re going to end up calling your child “Human” when it’s born.
October 11, 2010 @ 12:35 pm
lol… Hopefully by that time we’ll have a decided name for him/her by the time it’s born! 🙂
October 11, 2010 @ 12:23 pm
Haha yeah Sun Jae and I also got those baby center emails and thought the fruit and vegetable comparison was a little weird too, they also use really obscure ones, some that i’ve never heard of. It’s so amazing to have my son who is like 12 lbs now, and think that he used to be so tiny! It’s incredible!
October 11, 2010 @ 12:38 pm
I noticed some of the more obscure ones in the other timelines, too… I think it was a lentil bean at one point, and I’m not sure how big those are. haha*
Little Kosei is already 12 lbs? That’s amazing!!! I love seeing your photos on Facebook. I can’t wait until we get to see our own baby. 🙂
BTW, did you know my brother’s name is Kosei? I never heard of anyone else named that until your baby came along… 🙂 It’s a great name!
October 19, 2010 @ 12:13 pm
Whoa, I didn’t know your brother was named Kosei, that’s so cool! I only know a few other babies in our church community with that name, but yeah we really liked the meaning of it 🙂
October 19, 2010 @ 6:54 pm
It’s not a very common name, but yes, it’s a good name! 🙂 I wonder if your Kosei uses the same characters as my brother’s Kosei.
October 11, 2010 @ 4:08 pm
I had no idea you were expecting congrats! 🙂
October 12, 2010 @ 9:48 pm
Thank you Stella! 🙂
We only really made the news public about a week ago!
October 11, 2010 @ 5:40 pm
Wow, the fruit nickname is adorable. I’m stealing that for when I make babies..which hopefully won’t be soon.
Have you heard of the baby name genie? It’s my ridiculous guilty pleasure. I like to name my unborn babies, but maybe the genie will help you.

heehee* I think it’s a good nicknaming system, since it’s a good reminder of the progress and growth of the baby! 🙂
I’d never heard of the Baby Name Genie before… that’s so funny! I guess if I get desperate, I can always turn to the genie for some ideas…
October 11, 2010 @ 10:09 pm
cute!

Thanks Natalie! 🙂
