Mio
Labor Day Weekend: Part II
My friend Miyoung and her husband Mike were visiting San Francisco this weekend — they came all the way from New Jersey! I’ve known Miyoung since she moved to Virginia when we were in middle school, and we have been friends for over fifteen years! It feels like yesterday that we were both still in junior high, chatting for hours over the phone and having sleepovers watching The Joy Luck Club. We have both have grown up so much since, and are now both married! (I couldn’t make it to her wedding this May because I had just had Mio, but from the photos, she was the most gorgeous bride ever!) I always have fun when I’m with Miyoung, and it was nice to see her again and catch up — I’ve missed her so! Here are some photos from when a bunch of us friends went to lunch together on Sunday.
After lunch, Miyoung and Mike came over to our place, and Miyoung and I caught up for a few hours while our hubbies bonded playing video games together, and concluded the day with dinner. We so appreciated Miyoung and Mike spending the day with us, especially since we live on opposite sides of the country now. I miss you already, Miyoung! ♥
Labor Day Weekend: Part I
Dan leaves for a business trip this evening to Orlando, Florida, and won’t be back until Thursday evening. I’m a little nervous because this will be the longest I’ll have ever been alone with the Mio, but my mother-in-law will come take care of her on the days I’m at work as usual, and I’ll just have to fly solo with Mio in the evenings when I get off of work, despite my usual exhausted state on such workdays.
We made the best of this long holiday weekend before Dan leaves, though — here is Part I of our eventful Labor Day weekend!
On Saturday, we decided to take a day trip down to Santa Cruz, for Mio’s first time at the beach! We picked up some delicious gourmet sandwiches at The Junket to eat for lunch at the beach, and headed down in the early afternoon. We hit a lot of traffic on the way (to be expected, because of the long weekend) so it took a while to get to Santa Cruz, but we promptly set up spot on the beach as soon as we got there.
(Random coincidence: I realized afterwards that the romper Mio wore that day, which is a hand-me-down from my cousin Yuko’s daughters, is the exact same one that Sakura was wearing exactly a year ago when we visited their family on Labor Day weekend. Except that Mio is 5 months old here, and Sakura was 10 months old at the time. Oh, Mio… you are growing way too fast.)
Anyway, back to Santa Cruz: after about an hour, it started getting pretty cloudy. Not quite the perfect day at the beach that we had been anticipating. 🙁
So the trip to the beach started out nice, but it definitely could have been more enjoyable towards the end — hopefully next time, there’ll be more sun and warmer weather! We’re glad that we got to go to the beach before the summer’s over. Since the Bay Area typically experiences Indian summers, I have hope that we still have some warm weeks left before we enter the rainy season….
We also stopped by Buy Buy Baby in San Jose on our way back home, and picked up something we’ve been researching and eyeing for Mio for a while now. But we’ll save the big reveal for another day. 🙂
Rock Those Jeggings!
It’s no secret that I love jeggings, but I had no idea that they make them for babies, too! My dear friend Yoon (and former college roomie at the infamous 501-A!) sent Mio some adorable clothes this week — as usual, she has impeccable taste! 🙂 Check out this little fashionista!
Excuse both mother and daughter’s thunder thighs, but we’d like to introduce you to our very own edition of Who Wore It Better?, in which we are both wearing white tops and jeggings. Do I even stand a chance? I think not….
And to top the outfit off, Yoon also sent this lovely ribbon hat. I can’t make up my mind on whether it’s more a sailor cap or a beret, but one thing is for sure — it’s totally adorable!
Thank you so much, Yoon, for your thoughtful and generous gift of all the clothes! We can’t get over how cute they are. We hope that you can meet Mio someday soon… 🙂
Five Months Old.
Good morning, sweet pea! You are five months old today. We can’t help but marvel at how much you’ve grown!
(I’ll be taking photos of Mio sitting in my white desk chair and wearing her monthly onesie every month until she’s one year old.)

The Rundown at Five Months…
Stats: You weigh about 17 lbs 9 oz now! Although you’re just turning five months old, you’ve outgrown your 6-month size clothing and are now wearing 9-month clothes. In the past couple weeks, you’ve grown your first two teeth — right in the middle of your bottom gums!
Things You’re Doing Now: You are making our heads spin with how fast you’re growing! You’re really strong these days, and you love using your leg strength to bounce up and down in your doorway jumper, as well as push against the floor in an effort to stand when we hold you up. You’re not quite ready to sit up on your own yet, and so any efforts to do so always end in a faceplant. Your pediatrician told us that you may be late in becoming able to sit up, because you’re so heavy for your age! We’re totally fine with that, and just want to watch you grow and develop at your own pace. You are constantly reaching for things, especially our food. Just the other day during dinner, you grabbed a lemon wedge on Mommy’s plate and before she could stop you, you stuck it in your mouth! (You didn’t cry, but your face definitely showed the shock at how sour your prize was!) You’re chomping down on anything you can get your hands on, and your favorite toys to chew on are Sophie the Giraffe, your Winkel, and peacock Jacques (or as your Daddy likes to call him, “Jacques, Le Peacock!” with a heavy emphasis on the French accent. :P). You sleep approximately ten hours every night, and are awake for much of the daytime, only napping for thirty minutes to an hour a couple times a day. You definitely know who we are, and your eyes always follow me around the room, especially when I’m getting ready to go to work (which makes it that much harder for me to leave you!). You love going on walks with Grandma in the stroller and with Mommy in the BabyBjorn carrier, and you always stare about in wonder at the world around you. Dearest Mio, we want to show you everything that’s beautiful in this world… although in our eyes, you top all of those things!
