We spent Sunday afternoon at Oktoberfest in Reston Town Center! Dan’s new office building is right in Reston Town Center, so it was a nice opportunity to go see the area he works in and also enjoy the good eats/drinks and carnival rides that the festival had to offer! It was pretty cold and misty, but we still had a great time! 😀
We were cracking up at how big Mio was smiling when she got there, with her hands folded in her lap. It looks almost like she’s a villain (think Dr. Burns from The Simpsons)!
What is Oktoberfest without a cup of overpriced (but apparently delicious) beer?
Delicious steamed mussels from McCormick & Schmick’s
My sister and I don’t like nor drink beer, so our main focus was the food!
Amazing chicken kabobs from Midtown Kabob
…complete with samosa, also yummy!
Enjoying the meal while Mio looks on.
Peruvian chicken from Pollo Peru. So. Effing. Good.
Mio reaching for some while we chow down.
She grabbed a french fry!
Mio’s learned how to do “cheers!” and clink her cup against another person’s, but she’s so into it that she’ll do it with every type of food she happens to share with you, and multiple times (as in every five seconds). So when she and I both had Peruvian french fries in hand, she insisted on toasting and bumping them together… over and over. Here it is on video!
We just couldn’t get enough of that chicken, so we went and got a second plate to share!
Mio kept whipping her head back and forth to look at all the people passing by. She was so curious about everything that was going on around her.
A Daddy’s girl moment.
Enjoying the view from Auntie Miwa’s shoulders.
Buying tickets for the carnival rides.
There was a train ride that we could all ride together.
Our little family on the train.
Mio kept saying “ppo ppo” (Japanese equivalent of “choo choo,” the sound of a train puffing out smoke) while riding.
After the ride was done, she was eager for more carnival fun!
Mio kept saying “ba~ ba~” when she saw the Jamaican banana.
A carnival isn’t complete without funnel cake! So of course, we had to get one.
Miwa and Dan wanted to go on one of the scarier/intense rides. Here they are before taking flight.
Mio was really scared for them! When the ride lifted up into the air and started flying around, she started screaming and clung onto my legs. Poor girl was scared for her Daddy and auntie…
Dan and Miwa flying in the air! It looked terrifying, but they seemed to enjoy it.
As a finale, we took Mio on the carousel. She doesn’t really understand the difference between horses and cows yet, so she kept mooing and making cow noises while waiting in line and riding on the carousel. I corrected her the first couple times, but it was pretty cute so I just let her moo the whole ride through.
Mio getting on the carousel.
She had a very grave expression on her face the entire time.
Clenching her teeth! Mio’s been on carousels and merry-go-rounds a few times before, but she seemed more uptight this time – maybe because it was cold?
Of course, when the ride ended, she started getting upset and wanted to go on again… (On a separate note, isn’t the heart-shaped elbow patch on her jacket adorable? My mom got this jacket for her.)
Like with the Marin County Fair, there were a lot of rides Mio couldn’t go on because she wasn’t 36 inches tall, so that was kind of a bummer. Maybe in a year or two, she’ll get to enjoy more of the rides! 🙂
Today, we went to nearby Borge Street Park for a couple hours as a little family outing and to give Mio some time to play on the playground to her heart’s content. As usual, as soon as she saw the playground when she got out of the car, she squealed in delight and ran towards it!
I mentioned before that Mio is getting more affectionate these days, and we caught one of such sweet moments on video! Here she is, giving a kiss to Daddy and then blowing Mama a kiss.
Mio with her “Dadoo.” Definitely a Daddy’s girl…
On the big girl swing with mama. She squeals “whee!” while she swings! 🙂
Mio playing with her friend Junna, a daughter of a family friend who lives only a few blocks away. Junna-chan is only two months older than Mio, so they’re very close in age! 🙂 We’d let them play together in the past when we were visiting Virginia from California, but they’re finally at the age where they are interacting more and actually playing together. It’s really cute to watch!
Mio turned 18 months old today, on October 2! 🙂 She is now one and a half years old – how time flies! Growing up further into toddlerhood definitely brings with it new challenges along with all its joys, and Mio has been exercising more and more of her independent will these days… she seems to be more sensitive and emotional lately, especially when she doesn’t get what she wants, but is also learning and picking up on new things every day. When did she turn into a little grownup?
The Rundown at Eighteen Months…
Stats: We can’t find an accurate scale in the house, but you have most definitely gotten a lot heavier since we arrived in Virginia. Neither Daddy nor I can hold you for more than five minutes without having to eventually put you down because you are getting so heavy (your squirminess doesn’t help!). We estimate that you weigh around 27 lbs or so, but we’ll find out once we get an 18 month old appointment scheduled with your new pediatrician!
Things You’re Doing Now: To add to your vocabulary that I posted about last month, you have also learned “ao” (Japanese for “blue”), “aka” (“red”), and today you signed and said “chou-chou” (“butterfly”) for the first time! Your eating habits have gotten pickier, and you often only want to eat the same things that we’re eating… and you’re constantly eating. (I swear we feed you five meals a day.) Your favorite thing to do lately is to brush your teeth. You do it three or four times a day obsessively, and get upset if we don’t put enough toothpaste on it. (It seems like you like the minty taste, because we catch you sucking on the toothbrush head between brushes.) You also get a kick out of rinsing your mouth with water and spitting the toothpaste out. If we left you alone, you’d brush your teeth all day long, and when we try to wrestle the toothbrush out from you hand, you collapse into a screaming tantrum! I suppose brushing your teeth is not a bad habit to be obsessed with, so most of the time we let you go to town with it, but I’m starting to wonder if you are developing a little bit of OCD. Another thing you are really into is slapping lotion/moisturizer/cream on your face and rubbing it around on your cheeks — you just want to do everything you see the grownups doing! (When we try to take the cream away, you collapse and scream, again.) It’s really stressful to go out to eat with you at restaurants, because you are always trying to stand up in your high chair, get out and run around everywhere — you’ve even run into the chef’s kitchen a couple times. These are all the growing pains of toddlerhood and seemingly a preview of the “terrible two’s,” and while there are times when our patience starts to wear thin, there are some really sweet things you’re doing lately, too. You’ve discovered piggyback rides, and often come over and put your arms over my shoulders when I’m sitting down so that I’ll carry you around on my back. You say “Mama” a lot more now, and in the morning, I hear you calling “Mama” from your crib in the nursery. You’ve also started calling Dan “Da-doo” instead of “Daddy” lately for some reason (does this remind anyone else of Animaniacs?) — not sure how this change came about, but it’s pretty cute. Lately, when you watch your children’s songs, you clap, gesture, and sometimes interject along with them instead of just silently watching the screen.
Here you are, doing the gestures to “ito maki maki,” one of your favorite Japanese songs lately. (Your favorite English songs are “B-I-N-G-O” and “Old MacDonald Had a Farm.”)
I can’t believe it’s already October! The end of September just flew by, as the past few days have been pretty busy. On Thursday evening, we met up with my cousin’s husband Devin who was visiting from Arizona on business. It was his first time meeting Mio, and it was great catching up since the last time we saw him two years ago, and hearing about how my cousin Yuko and their kids were doing. Hopefully we’ll have a chance to see Yuko, Beni-chan and Sakura-chan soon! I’m sure Mio would love them, too.
Dinner with Devin at Blue Ocean Japanese Restaurant.
Friday evening, my sister and I met up with friends in Silver Spring, Maryland, to watch the Japanese rock band B’z perform live in concert!

On Saturday, we drove down to Richmond to attend our friend Stephanie and Danny’s wedding! Before we left, we dropped Mio off with a family friend in the morning so they could watch her for much of the day. They have a daughter who is only 2 months older than Mio, so I heard that they played very well together while Dan and I were in Richmond!
What was supposed to be a two hour drive ended up taking longer due to a huge funeral procession that was on I-95, but we made it just in time for the ceremony, which was held at the beautiful Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in the heart of Richmond. (Apologies for the poor picture quality — I only had my phone with me to take pictures!)
Waiting for the ceremony to start

We were so happy we could move back in time to attend their wedding!
With the beautiful bride ♥ I can’t believe I’ve known Stephanie for 11 years now – she was one of the first friends I made at Virginia Tech! Congratulations Mrs.Om!
With the lovely couple!
One of the most delicious cupcakes I’ve ever had!

Fun in the photobooth!
Sunday was devoted to spending lots of quality time with Mio, as I hadn’t gotten to spend any time with her Friday evening and all of Saturday.
