Mio Reacts to Nemo’s Abduction

April 16, 2013 By Misono in Mio, Videos Tags: abduction, Finding Nemo, Mio

A favorite film of Mio’s to watch is Finding Nemo, and she always says “fishhh fishhh” and “turtle” whenever she wants to watch it. She must have seen the movie over a dozen times by now, and knows it pretty well now. (She’ll even exclaim “turtle!” right before the scene with the turtles start, which shows that she’s pretty much memorized the whole movie. lol) Today, she had a really intense reaction while watching the scene where Nemo is about to get abducted by the boat. She started shouting, jumping up and down and flailing as if to warn Nemo not to get any closer to the boat! It cracked me up. See for yourself!

We Will Not Forget

Remembering 4.16.07. This day will never be the same for me and so many others from Virginia Tech. It seems that with each passing year, April is a month more and more crowded with heartbreak for too many. It is with a heavy heart that we remember our fallen friends and classmates, but it’s so important that we never, ever forget.

The late Dr. Zenobia Lawrence Hikes said it best at the dedication of the April 16th Memorial on August 19, 2007:
(Listen to the actual podcast here.)

On behalf of the entire university community, I thank each of you for being with us on this very solemn occasion. We particularly acknowledge the families of the deceased; the injured and other surviving students and their families; our faculty and staff; new students; those who have been involved with crisis management, recovery, and support; and all who have grieved.

On April 16, 2007, the peace that comes with learning was shattered on our campus, and the academy forever changed. As a result of the horrific tragedy that day, our hearts have been crushed, our spirits shaken, and our minds and bodies left weary. None of us anywhere in the world were mentally prepared for a tragedy of this magnitude in higher education.

Yet, in the midst of our insurmountable grief, we have been embraced by our colleagues in the Virginia Tech community and by friends old and new–our brothers and sisters from around the world. In the process, the Virginia Tech family has become not only closer, but it has also become larger.

Anyone who reads the biographies of the fallen is struck by their exceptional talent and goodness. Regardless of age, each had accomplished much but had much, much more to give. We, as survivors, have a responsibility to continue their unrealized service.

Today, we join together as a community to honor, commemorate, and pay tribute to the talented minds of those innocent individuals who were taken from us far too soon. These cherished members of the Virginia Tech family–the young, gifted minds searching for knowledge and the dedicated, talented professors imparting that knowledge–will never be forgotten.

With our native limestone as the base, we have etched their names into the foundation of this great university. The dedication of this memorial marks our determination to treasure the beautiful lives they lived.

As we move forward, their spirits will always be with us, permeating our commitment to education. Teaching and learning were central to their lives, and we will continue to invent the future through our university’s steadfast dedication to teaching and learning, to research and discovery, to service and engagement, and to innovation.

It is our sincere hope that in the years ahead, all who walk this path will remember their special gifts and seek to fulfill their unrealized service.

April 16 is a difficult day every year, no matter how many years have passed. And yet it is particularly painful this year as yesterday’s tragedy at the Boston Marathon weighs heavily on our minds… our heartache over such unfathomable events just seems endless. I hope that one day, we will see an end to such senseless violence.

Kenwood Cherry Blossoms

Kenwood cherry blossoms

The cherry blossoms at Kenwood may not be as famous as the ones in DC, but they are just as stunning… I know a lot of people who actually prefer the trees in Kenwood! I had heard of Kenwood, but had never taken the chance to go see them until last Thursday, when I went with Mio, my father, and my sister Miwa. The canopy of blossoms that continues for as far as the eye can see makes it feel like you’re walking through a pink cloud… it was truly breathtaking!

I only had my phone camera on me to snap photos, so the pictures don’t quite do the blossoms justice, but I’m glad that I could capture some of the beauty of these gorgeous sakura.

Here’s a video I took on my phone as we were driving out of Kenwood, so you can see just how many cherry blossoms there are turn by turn. I apologize for the shakiness and poor quality. Dan tried to improve it a little by stabilizing it so that the blossoms themselves don’t shake very much (hence why you see the edges of the video shifting).

I feel that Kenwood is not an alternative to the Tidal Basin blossoms, but a primary destination in its own right, and I think I might actually prefer it to the DC blossoms! I loved how we felt surrounded by the cherry blossoms everywhere we turned, and how they formed impressive canopies above us. I also liked the fact that it was not as crowded as the Tidal Basin, and I didn’t have to worry about navigating through the seas of people and making sure I didn’t bump into strangers while admiring the blossoms. This might be our go-to place for hanami from now on!

Cherry Blossoms in DC

Since moving back to the DC area, one of the things we’ve looked forward to most is going to see the famous cherry blossoms that bloom around the Tidal Basin every spring. The annual National Cherry Blossom Festival commemorates the gift of 3,000 cherry blossom trees from Japan to the city of Washington, DC back in 1912. 101 years later, the beautiful cherry blossoms and festival celebrate the continued friendship between the two countries. Growing up minutes away from the nation’s capital and this spring spectacle of blossoms, cherry blossoms easily became one of my favorite flowers. I hadn’t seen them in years since I went off to college and then moved to California. Even while on the West Coast, I’d always wish I could visit during cherry blossom season so I could see the Tidal Basin surrounded by sakura, so I was really looking forward to being able to see them for the first time in over a decade! The initial forecast of peak bloom was at the end of March but those dates came and went without any signs of buds nor blooms due to the cold days of this year’s lingering winter. They finally came around, though, almost two weeks later when the weather jumped into the 80s, making it feel like we’d skipped spring and went straight into summer. It made for a gorgeous few days of sunshine that were perfect to walk about and see these magnificent blossoms in full bloom. Our family went on Wednesday afternoon, right after Dan had flown back in from the NAB Show since he didn’t have to go into work the rest of the day. It worked out perfectly because we could go right during the peak bloom period!

Spring at last… (in snapshots)

April 9, 2013 By Misono in Family and Friends, Local Gems, Mio, Recreational Fun Tags: Instagram, Mio, snapshots, spring

It seems that spring is finally here. Or rather, based on the weather we’ve been getting this week, that we’ve skipped it altogether and jumped from winter to summer! We’ve been enjoying temperatures up in 80s so far this week, but after months of chilliness, the warmer weather is a welcome respite. I’m not complaining!

Here are some snapshots from the past few days, including the weekend.
