Today, I found Mio playing with her toy banjo and singing — she sang “Baa Baa Black Sheep,” the alphabet song, and then “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” on her own, without me saying anything. I thought it was really interesting that she happened to pick those three particular songs and sang them consecutively, one after another. Could it be that she’s figured out that they all share the same melody?
The weather was much warmer this weekend, and Mio got to have her first gardening experience with Daddy on Saturday! They planted tomato, cucumber, and cilantro seeds in egg cartons to get them growing before we transfer them to the soil later in the spring.
Mio listened really well to Dan and did a great job of dropping the seeds into the little holes Dan made in the soil. Maybe she’ll grow up to have a green thumb (unlike her Mama’s black thumb… for the life of me, I can’t manage to keep any plants alive!). We’re looking forward to see how our produce will grow in the coming months.
Today was Hinamatsuri, or Girls’ Day, in Japan. In recent months, Mio’s really taken an interest in building blocks and puzzles. With her blocks, she usually likes to just stack them as high as she can and proudly proclaims, “tower!” when she’s done, before knocking it over and saying, “tower fall down!” She loves playing blocks with Daddy because he helps her build more complex structures — today, Mio called me over to proudly show me their “robot” creation.

Mio loves to play dress-up these days, and her favorite thing is to transform into a “ballerina” by wearing her pink dress. (Special thanks to Auntie Jina who gifted it to her — we’ve gotten a lot of wear out of it!) I think she doesn’t really understand what a princess is yet, as I’ve noticed she calls all princesses in pretty dresses in her books, movies, and shows “ballerinas.” As much as we try not to maintain gender neutral toys and activities with Mio, there is a part of me that can’t help but indulge in the full-on girliness of teatime and dress-up, as long as Mio’s the one that initiates it… probably because they’re the kind of things that I admittedly loved doing when I was a little girl, too.
I can’t believe how much our sweet little Mio has grown… I’m kind of in denial that she’s going to turn three in a month!
