Of beaches, chicken wings, and mummies.

The weather has been amazing for the last week here, and this past weekend was no exception. It’s regularly been sunny and 70 degrees, and it really feels like spring has finally arrived. I am not a huge fan of rain, so I couldn’t wait for the rainy season to be over. (The weather in the Bay Area is pretty nice all year round, with the exception of about eleven straight weeks of rain, during which I am miserable.)

Dan and I decided to spend Saturday in San Francisco, since we had tickets to go see the Tutankhamun exhibit at de Young museum in the evening. I’d been wanting to see the exhibit since it came to San Francisco in June of last year, and it happens to be ending next weekend. (Talk about waiting until the last minute, huh?) We spent the afternoon walking around Baker Beach, which sparkled under the California sunshine. The beach also has a great view of the Golden Gate Bridge.

After the beach, we drove through Golden Gate Park and headed over to dinner, past the rolling hills of San Francisco…

…and arrived at San Tung! The dry-fried chicken wings here are out of this world! I’m usually not that crazy about wings because they are so messy to eat, but these are the best I have ever had. Ever!

San Tung's dry-fried chicken wings. Amazing!

The shrimp and leek dumplings are pretty yummy, too…

Plus the seafood noodle soup! Yes, we ate all of this between the two of us.

Full and content, we headed over to de Young Museum to see the exhibit “Tutankhamun and The Golden Age of The Pharoahs.”

Tutankhamun exhibit at DeYoung

It was a great exhibit!

I realize that my blog post title is a little misleading, because we didn’t actually see any mummies. King Tut’s mummy and his three nested coffins and stone sarcophagus have actually never left Egypt, and he continues to rest in the Valley of the Kings. I wanted to see the gold mask of King Tut (which apparently travelled around the world for different exhibits back in the ’70s), but the Egyptian government no longer lets it travel outside of Egypt, as it has been declared a national treasure (and rightly so). Still, the exhibition at de Young was very impressive, showcasing over 130 outstanding works from King Tut’s tomb, as well as those of his royal predecessors, family, and court officials. It’s incredible how intricately and artfully crafted those pieces were, when they were created over 3,200 years ago. During my four years of taking art history courses in college, I remember studying some of those works in my archaeology course with Profess or Knoblauch so it was sort of surreal to see them in person. I feel really fortunate to have been able to catch the exhibit in its last week. Although Tutankhamun is leaving San Francisco at the end of the month, it’ll be making its way over to New York, Toronto and Denver in the coming months, so I definitely recommend it for anyone who is interested and lives near one of those cities!

We Moved!

March 21, 2010 By Misono in News and Updates Tags: 99 Ranc, apartment, BART, Berkeley, duplex, El Cerrito, El Cerrito Shopping Plaza, home, move, moving, RENT, Trader Joe's, Yaoya-san

This update is long overdue, but two weeks ago, we moved from our small one bedroom apartment in Berkeley to a two bedroom duplex in El Cerrito. We’re still renting and it will likely be a while before we’re able to buy (let alone afford) our own house, but for now, we’re just grateful to have a little more space.

The move went pretty smoothly — before the big moving day, we slowly took a bunch of boxes over to the new place everyday, and then on moving day we moved the rest of our belongings as well as all heavy furniture in a moving truck within half a day. We went back to the Berkeley apartment last weekend to scrub and sweep to make sure everything was in good shape to turn back over to our previous landlord.

Goodbye, Berkeley!
Our old apartment building in Berkeley. The building itself was almost 100 years old, but the inside has recently been remodeled. Goodbye Berkeley! Thank you for the fun times.

Berkeley had been fun to live in for a while — there’s definitely a lot to do and so many good places to eat, and it was fun to be in a college town again. I’m going to miss having three movie theaters within walking distance and all the delicious ethnic restaurants that were in the neighborhood. Unfortunately, since we were on a main road and very close to Berkeley High School, it was always pretty loud and over the course of the year, we outgrew the place and decided that we needed a more spacious living space.

El Cerrito is only the next town over from Berkeley, so we didn’t move very far. It’s definitely a more residential area compared to the rowdy semi-urban college town of Berkeley, and so it’s a lot quieter. We live right by a huge shopping center that has a Bed, Bath and Beyond, Lucky’s, Barnes & Noble, JoAnn Fabrics, CVS Pharmacy, a handful of restaurants, and… ::drumroll please:: Trader Joe’s! I love grocery shopping at Trader Joe’s, so it’s exciting that we have one only two blocks away now. Dan, being Mr. Fix-It, loves that there is a big Ace Hardware and TAP Plastics nearby. haha* We are also lucky enough to have the El Cerrito Plaza BART station within less than two blocks — so much closer than we were to Downtown Berkeley BART when we lived at our previous apartment. The post office, UPS, and bank are also within walking distance — I walk everywhere because I gave up my car last year, so it makes life so much easier to have those so close by. 99 Ranch and the small Japanese grocery store we shop at (Yaoya-san) is also very close, so we can always be fully stocked with our Asian food.

Although there are still a few boxes lying around, we’ve pretty much settled in to our new place and we are really enjoying it so far. Here are some photos!

We are using the second bedroom as an office.

Finally! My own desk.
I finally have room to have my own desk! Yes, that's right -- in the two and a half years since moving out to California, I didn't have my own desk. Can you believe it? I was always marginalized at the corner of Dan's ginormous desk, occasionally roaming with my laptop over to the coffee table or dining table. But now that we have the space, I bought myself my own desk and chair. Exciting!

workspace
So nice to have my very own workspace! My at-home workflow is so much better now.

There’s still a lot of things I’d like to do to help prettify the place, but right now I’m just happy to be moved in. It’s difficult to invest a lot of time and effort when you know that the place you’re living is temporary and I keep dreaming of the day I’ll be able to decorate and furnish my very own forever home. I am happy with the way we are set up for now, though, and now that we have more space, we will also be able to comfortably host visiting friends and family. For our local friends, please feel free to visit us, and for those who are farther way, it may just be time to start planning those vacations out to the Bay Area… 😉

…and watch this video.

The man is so talented! I’ve always been a huge fan of Hugh Jackman, but this video reduced me to a pool of fangirl goo. (SQUEE!) There’s something about a man who can dance…

Precious.

I’ve been wanting to see this movie for months now, and tonight I finally got to watch it. Shocking and deeply tragic, it packs quite a brutal punch. It was at once the most powerful and painful movie of 2009. Definitely a must-see.

(And I almost didn’t recognize Mariah Carey! She looks totally different when she’s not all dolled up.)

It’s the little things…

March 13, 2010 By Misono in Family and Friends, News and Updates Tags: Danny, dimsum, fortune, fortune cookie, friends, Hawaii, honeymoon, Honolulu, Kauai, Oahu, San Francisco, Stephanie

Sometimes, it’s the little things that help alleviate the stress of the daily grind. Life has been pretty draining and taxing on the nerves lately with the moving, being overloaded with client work, and just being my usual worrywart self. I have to keep reminding myself to think positive in times like these and appreciate the fact that I actually have so much and am really lucky to have wonderful people in our lives. Sometimes those reminders come in the simplest of forms…

It's the little things.

The past couple weeks have been completely occupied with moving (which we will update about later), but we took a break last Sunday to meet up over dimsum in San Francisco with my friend Stephanie and her boyfriend Danny, who were visiting the Bay Area from DC for the weekend. I hadn’t seen Steph since last summer, so it was nice to catch up with my lovely friend after not seeing her for nine months! I wish they had been staying in the area longer, but I was grateful for the time that we could meet up, even if it was only for a couple hours.

lunch with Stephanie

I’ve made some great friends here in California in the past two and a half years, but inevitably I really do miss my friends from back East and am sad that I only get to see them once or twice a year. So it’s always really exciting when they are ever in the Bay Area to visit, even for a short time. It’s difficult to keep in touch with friends and family who are far away when you’re buried under projects at work and the menial tasks that end up taking over virtually all of your free time, but I’m determined to be better about it this year. I’m excited about the upcoming weeks because I just found out more friends will be coming into town, as well as for last minute opportunities that cropped up to fly out to see other dear friends that I haven’t seen in a while.

We also just booked our flight to Hawaii in June! Our friends are getting married in Honolulu, and since Dan and I both have never been to Hawaii and have not yet gone on an official honeymoon, we figured we’d take the opportunity to extend our stay there for a little over a week and just enjoy it and relax. We’ll be going to Oahu first and then flying over to Kauai for the second half of our stay. So excited! 😀 If anyone has any tips or recommendations on places to go, things to see, where to eat (you know us foodies), we’d love to hear them!
