Crazy About Cardmaking

September 3, 2010 By Misono in Creative Corner Tags: cardmaking, embossing, paper quilling, Paper Source, quilling

My latest obsession that has been keeping me occupied in my free time is cardmaking! My friend and I took an introductory cardmaking workshop at Paper Source last week, where we learned how to emboss, stamp, use punches, line envelopes, among other techniques, and I had so much fun! Cards can get so expensive these days if you keep buying them in stores, and it’s so nice to be able to make custom creative cards of your own! I’ve been bitten by the bug and bought some basic tools and supplies and have been daydreaming about all the possible creations I can make! I’m still very much a beginner, but here are some of the cards I’ve made so far…

My current favorite is definitely the embossing. It produces such a cool effect, and is super easy!

Unrelated to the workshop, I also started learning to do paper quilling on my own recently, and decided to try integrating it into my cards in this one:

I even got Dan semi-interested in cardmaking, too! He made the “Bon Appetit” card to the right, below. The other two are ones I made at the workshop. 🙂

I am lucky that I work in a field where I can be creative at work, but all the time spent sitting in front of the computer and coding for hours can get a little draining after a while. I like embracing my inner grandma from time to time and working with crafts where I can create things that are more hands-on. Being a graphic designer, I’m used to the ease of designing my own holiday cards on the computer and getting them printed en masse, but this year I’m toying with the idea of handmade holiday cards….

A New Set of Wheels: My Honda Fit!

September 1, 2010 By Misono in News and Updates Tags: 2010, car, Honda Fit, Honda Fit Sport

On Sunday, Dan bought me a new car. It’s a shiny, brand-spanking-new, 2010 Honda Fit Sport, fully loaded, in blue! I’ve wanted a Fit since I first started seeing them on the road in 2007, and as much as my sportscar-loving male friends laughed and made fun of me whenever I said this, I’ve stood by it as my “dream car.” (Lucky for Dan, my dream car was not a Porsche or something ridiculous like that….)

It’s adorable and I love it… but I’m also a little apprehensive — okay, make that utterly terrified — of driving it.

If you know my history with cars, you’ll know that I have had three vehicles in my lifetime, and they’ve always been over ten years old at the time of ownership. You’ll also know that two of those three cars met their untimely demise with me behind the steering wheel. (Although I do want to point out that one of those casualties was not my fault — I was rear-ended at an intersection by an elderly woman who shouldn’t even have been driving because she had her license revoked. My first car, and it was totaled.) It’s been almost ten years since my last car accident, but I was able to avoid driving all throughout college, and although I had a car for a little over a year since moving out to California, I was happy to give it up when we moved to Berkeley and I no longer had a need for one because I could walk and BART virtually everywhere I needed to go by myself. Dan’s car is a manual, and I was perfectly happy not being able to (or allowed to) drive it.

To be honest, if I could get through life without ever having to drive at all, I wouldn’t be happier. But alas, Dan put down his foot and insisted that I really need to get into the habit of driving again, since it will be necessary sooner or later and I can’t run away from it forever.

So I’m very excited about my new ride, although I hesitated to announce it to the world right away, simply because I knew people would expect me to start driving it everywhere, and the thought of me being entrusted with a brand new car makes my stomach turn. (I have so far only driven it when the salesman at the dealer forced me to test-drive it to make sure I liked it and was comfortable with it.) But I suppose if I’m going to have a car that I’m going to be comfortable in and is easy to drive, this is the one — it drives very smoothly, and the visibility is better than any car I’ve ever been in. Someday, I will be comfortable driving again and I envision a bright future where I’ll be able to go everywhere in my little blue Fit. But for now, I am taking baby steps….

August Visitors

August 31, 2010 By Misono in Family and Friends Tags: April, August, Ed, Luice, R&G Lounge, San Fracisco, San Tung, SF, Stephanie, Sue

August was a banner month of visiting friends! Besides my family, who came to visit earlier in the month, we had the pleasure of seeing some of my college friends who were in town the past couple weeks. Schedules were busy and meeting times were limited, but it was so nice to see some familiar faces….

A couple of weeks ago, we had dinner with Jamie when she stopped by San Francisco for a weekend after completing her internship at Samsung in South Korea. We unfortunately could only meet her for dinner on a Friday night because we were in Las Vegas the rest of the weekend, but we caught up over some delicious seafood at R&G Lounge in San Francisco. Jamie was only a freshman when I was a senior, but she seems so grown up now! It made me so proud! (And at the same time made me feel old! haha*)

This past weekend, Luice and Stephanie were in town for their cousin’s wedding, and they were able to make some time for a short brunch before they had to rush off to the nuptials. I was so happy to see the Woo sisters again! 😀 We went to San Tung in Inner Sunset, famous for their dry-fried chicken wings!

In addition to visitors, I was excited to have two friends from back East move to the area this month as well. Sue, who came to visit last month, landed an awesome job out here at a renowned architecture firm, and our friends April and Ed (now engaged!) made the move earlier this month for April to start her PhD program at UC Berkeley. We’re so happy to have so many new neighbors from back home! 😀

Las Vegas!

August 30, 2010 By Misono in Family and Friends, Wanderlust

A couple weeks ago, Dan and I flew to Las Vegas for a 3-day weekend with some of my college friends! It was the first time being in Sin City for both Dan and myself, so everything was new to us! We got to eat some good food, watch the Cirque du Soleil show KA (the highlight of the trip for me!) and even I dabbled in some gambling…!

Here are some photos:

I was feeling under the weather much of the weekend, so I feel like I wasn’t able to fully enjoy Vegas, but it was nice to be able to see some of my college friends again. Next weekend, we’ll be flying to Phoenix to visit my cousin’s family for Labor Day Weekend, but after that, we’ll be done with jetsetting for a while….

South Lake Tahoe with the Family

My family was in town a couple weeks ago, and we got to spend some quality time together. It was the first time that all of us Yokoyama’s were together since New Years, so I was ecstatic to see them all again! I took a Friday off to spend a day with them in San Francisco, and then we drove to South Lake Tahoe for the weekend. Here are some photos from the Yokoyama reunion! 😀

Dan and I treated the family to a delicious shabu shabu all-you-can-eat dinner.

On Saturday morning, we headed out in the morning to drive to South Lake Tahoe. I’ve been to Tahoe before, but it was in the winter when there was snow, and it was the northern side at Northstar, so this was a whole new experience to visit the southern side and in the summertime!

It was really hot in Tahoe, so we cooled down with some shaved ice. (They claimed it was Hawaiian style, but it just didn't compare....)

I had a wonderful time with the family, but as always, I wish I could have made it longer! It’s so hard when you live across the country from your family and loved ones. I can’t wait until the holidays, when we can go visit them back East! 🙂
