Last Saturday, our friends’ daughter Ellie had a birthday party celebrating her first birthday! They held such a beautiful party, with adorable decorations and delicious food! Here are some pictures of all the birthday fun. ♥
The lovely spread for Ellie’s first birthday party! ♥
Beautiful Korean rice cake for Ellie’s first birthday!
Delicious cupcakes from Georgetown Cupcake for a Dr. Seuss-themed party!
The birthday girl with her cake!
21 month old Mio, taking in all the excitement. She was a little overwhelmed by all the people and refused to leave my lap for the first half of the party.
For the Doljanchi tradition, Ellie chose the trumpet. Future musician!
Mio and Ellie meet for the first time.
Ellie looks concerned and a little weirded out from seeing Mio sticking everything in her mouth. “Seriously? Shouldn’t you have outgrown that by now?” lol
After a while, Mio started warming up to everyone, especially Ellie’s Daddy.
Cutiepies!
Trying to get a smile out of the birthday girl.
Madison girlfriends! I can’t believe it’s been almost twelve years since we went to high school together.
Thank you so much to the Hwang family for inviting us to be a part of such a special day! Happy birthday sweet Ellie ♥
On New Year’s Day last week, Mio hosted a little party for Dan and I and her doll friends using her new kitchen. We also let her play with her cupcake set (which our friend Katie got for her last year) and she was super excited to bake cupcakes just like Mama! She knew exactly what to do because she’s always watching me closely while I’m baking.
Taking the cupcakes out of the oven. She even wore her oven mitt and said “Acchi-cchi!” (Japanese sound for when something is hot to touch.)
Putting frosting and candles on the cupcakes.
She made sure everyone got a cupcake. (Poor girl scratched herself in her sleep so there’s a scratch next to her nose. Thankfully, it’s already healed and disappeared!)
I helped Mio decorate the cupcakes. By the way, this cupcake set by Melissa & Doug is awesome! It comes with a cupcake pan, removable “frosting” and dry erase “icing” markers that you can draw on the cupcakes with. And it all wipes clean when you are done.
Daddy and Mio admiring the cupcakes.
Mio was so happy with her cupcakes!
Dan teaching Mio how to properly drink tea (pinky up! lol).
A video that I took during Mio’s “party”:
It was so sweet to see how much Mio loved playing with the cupcakes along with her kitchen. She’s definitely a dessert lover — she’s so quick to spot them in a book or at a restaurant, and will point and says “kei-ki” (her way of saying “cake”) obsessively. A girl after my own heart! ♥
My first blog post of 2013! I haven’t had a chance to really write because the first week of this year has been a whirlwind… lots of office visits to get my professional life in order for the coming months. It was tough only seeing Mio for two hours in the evenings, but I’ve come back with even more of an appreciation for the time I have with her now.
Here’s a funny video we took of Mio over the weekend. We noticed she was walking funny and wobbling in a way that looked like she was almost limping. We watched her closely and realized that she was walking/running on her tip toes, not letting her heel hit the floor. It’s nothing we taught her nor showed her, and I’m not sure what prompted her to do walk like that, but it amused us so we got it on video.
Hope everyone had a very merry Christmas holiday! We had a wonderful time spending it with my family at home. Here are some memorable moments from Christmas morning… it was Mio’s second Christmas ever!

She looks so grownup here! Playing with her awesome magnetic wooden Tegu blocks from my parents.
Mio with her toy kitchen from Uncle Ted! I think I was even more excited than she was!

Thank you Grandpa and Grandma!
As many of you know, Christmas Day is also my birthday, and this year was an extra special milestone as it was my 30th birthday! Dan made it truly memorable by showering me with little treats, gifts, and love notes during the twelve days leading up to my birthday (instead of the Twelve Days of Christmas), and of course I appreciated all the birthday messages from friends and family!
Celebrating my 30th birthday in the evening.
Mio got to taste-test my tiramisu birthday cake that Dan & my mom prepared for me.
Making a wish…
30 has been wonderful so far, and I am so happy as long as I have this sweet girl and Dan by my side! They are my everything. ♥ Thank you to everyone who sent birthday messages, cards, and even gifts. And finally, thank you to everyone who supported and contributed to my charity: water campaign. Thanks to all of our collective efforts of 37 donations, we were able to surpass the $1,000 goal and raise $1,030! This will help 51 people get access to safe, clean water. In 18 months, we’ll be able to see exactly which products we’ve funded and the communities we were able to help. Thank you for helping to make such a big difference this year and making my 30th really count! My birthday wish has come true, and it’s one I’ll never forget. 🙂
Warm holiday wishes from our little family. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! ♥
