For Labor Day weekend, Dan and I flew to Gilbert, Arizona to spend a couple days with my cousin Yuko, her husband Devin, and their lovely family!
To be technical, Yuko is not exactly my cousin… she’s actually my grandfather’s uncle’s adopted son’s daughter, or something complicated like that (we always talk about it when we see each other, but we’re never quite sure), so we are not even related by blood! Â Still, she’s the closest in age to me out of all of my relatives in Japan, and we used to always play together when I’d visit Japan as a child, so we always called each other cousins and I feel so much closer to her than any of my real cousins (who are all significantly older than me by at least ten years). It’s funny because people always tell us that we look alike (we’re both pretty dark in complexion), even though we’re supposedly not blood relations! I agree that I look more like her than any of my actual cousins.
Three years older than me, Yuko has always been like the older sister I’ve always wanted. Whenever we’d visit Hiroshima, she would take me around to fun places, show me new things, and tell me such interesting stories. She was the one who taught me how to put on nail polish and shave my legs, and would give me some of the cutest clothes that she’d outgrown. We used to write to each other pretty regularly, even though we only got to see each other every few years.
Imagine my surprise when Yuko married her long-time boyfriend Devin (whom she’d met in Hiroshima) six years ago, and announced that she would be moving from Japan to Arizona! I was so excited to have her in the same country as me, and Dan and I visited her and Devin back in July of 2005, when we went on a road trip. We had a lot of fun with them, and it remains one of my fondest memories! Unfortunately, we didn’t get another chance to visit until this past weekend — I couldn’t believe that I’d let five years go by without seeing my favorite “cousin”! Since we last saw them, Devin and Yuko have had two adorable additions to their family, and I was psyched to finally get to meet their beautiful daughters!

Upon arriving in Phoenix, Yuko brought us to her house and served us a delicious homemade Japanese lunch! She then took us to the Arizona Museum for Youth in Mesa, which happened to have a “Jump to Japan!” exhibit going on. We were excited to find that they had Totoro there!

Afterwards, Yuko took us to Taliesin West in Scottsdale. Taliesin West was architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s winter home and school in the desert from 1937 until his death in 1959 at the age of 91. It had a very unique look to it!

In the evening, Beni’s friend was having a birthday party in Scottsdale, so we tagged along and cooled down by the pool.
The next day, Devin was able to join us for the whole day, and we went to the Phoenix Zoo in the morning, hoping to go in the cooler hours to avoid the heat.
After the zoo, Devin and Yuko treated us to some delicious local Arizona BBQ! In the evening, we went to Devin’s parents’ home and had a great time catching up with them and getting to know them better — we had met them when we visited five years ago, and they are really the most genuine and hospitable people. 🙂 We can’t wait to visit again!
It was delightful seeing Yuko and Devin again, and I loved meeting their little girls! Yuko had a lot of advice and wisdom to share, and I was really grateful for all the time we could spend together catching up and talking about all kinds of things, just like when we were kids. Hopefully we won’t let another five years pass before we see each other again! I miss her and her family already!
My latest obsession that has been keeping me occupied in my free time is cardmaking! My friend and I took an introductory cardmaking workshop at Paper Source last week, where we learned how to emboss, stamp, use punches, line envelopes, among other techniques, and I had so much fun! Cards can get so expensive these days if you keep buying them in stores, and it’s so nice to be able to make custom creative cards of your own! I’ve been bitten by the bug and bought some basic tools and supplies and have been daydreaming about all the possible creations I can make! I’m still very much a beginner, but here are some of the cards I’ve made so far…
My current favorite is definitely the embossing. It produces such a cool effect, and is super easy!
Unrelated to the workshop, I also started learning to do paper quilling on my own recently, and decided to try integrating it into my cards in this one:
I even got Dan semi-interested in cardmaking, too! He made the “Bon Appetit” card to the right, below. The other two are ones I made at the workshop. 🙂
I am lucky that I work in a field where I can be creative at work, but all the time spent sitting in front of the computer and coding for hours can get a little draining after a while. I like embracing my inner grandma from time to time and working with crafts where I can create things that are more hands-on. Being a graphic designer, I’m used to the ease of designing my own holiday cards on the computer and getting them printed en masse, but this year I’m toying with the idea of handmade holiday cards….
On Sunday, Dan bought me a new car. It’s a shiny, brand-spanking-new, 2010 Honda Fit Sport, fully loaded, in blue! I’ve wanted a Fit since I first started seeing them on the road in 2007, and as much as my sportscar-loving male friends laughed and made fun of me whenever I said this, I’ve stood by it as my “dream car.” (Lucky for Dan, my dream car was not a Porsche or something ridiculous like that….)
It’s adorable and I love it… but I’m also a little apprehensive — okay, make that utterly terrified — of driving it.
If you know my history with cars, you’ll know that I have had three vehicles in my lifetime, and they’ve always been over ten years old at the time of ownership. You’ll also know that two of those three cars met their untimely demise with me behind the steering wheel. (Although I do want to point out that one of those casualties was not my fault — I was rear-ended at an intersection by an elderly woman who shouldn’t even have been driving because she had her license revoked. My first car, and it was totaled.) It’s been almost ten years since my last car accident, but I was able to avoid driving all throughout college, and although I had a car for a little over a year since moving out to California, I was happy to give it up when we moved to Berkeley and I no longer had a need for one because I could walk and BART virtually everywhere I needed to go by myself. Dan’s car is a manual, and I was perfectly happy not being able to (or allowed to) drive it.
To be honest, if I could get through life without ever having to drive at all, I wouldn’t be happier. But alas, Dan put down his foot and insisted that I really need to get into the habit of driving again, since it will be necessary sooner or later and I can’t run away from it forever.
So I’m very excited about my new ride, although I hesitated to announce it to the world right away, simply because I knew people would expect me to start driving it everywhere, and the thought of me being entrusted with a brand new car makes my stomach turn. (I have so far only driven it when the salesman at the dealer forced me to test-drive it to make sure I liked it and was comfortable with it.) But I suppose if I’m going to have a car that I’m going to be comfortable in and is easy to drive, this is the one — it drives very smoothly, and the visibility is better than any car I’ve ever been in. Someday, I will be comfortable driving again and I envision a bright future where I’ll be able to go everywhere in my little blue Fit. But for now, I am taking baby steps….
August was a banner month of visiting friends! Besides my family, who came to visit earlier in the month, we had the pleasure of seeing some of my college friends who were in town the past couple weeks. Schedules were busy and meeting times were limited, but it was so nice to see some familiar faces….
A couple of weeks ago, we had dinner with Jamie when she stopped by San Francisco for a weekend after completing her internship at Samsung in South Korea. We unfortunately could only meet her for dinner on a Friday night because we were in Las Vegas the rest of the weekend, but we caught up over some delicious seafood at R&G Lounge in San Francisco. Jamie was only a freshman when I was a senior, but she seems so grown up now! It made me so proud! (And at the same time made me feel old! haha*)
This past weekend, Luice and Stephanie were in town for their cousin’s wedding, and they were able to make some time for a short brunch before they had to rush off to the nuptials. I was so happy to see the Woo sisters again! 😀 We went to San Tung in Inner Sunset, famous for their dry-fried chicken wings!
In addition to visitors, I was excited to have two friends from back East move to the area this month as well. Sue, who came to visit last month, landed an awesome job out here at a renowned architecture firm, and our friends April and Ed (now engaged!) made the move earlier this month for April to start her PhD program at UC Berkeley. We’re so happy to have so many new neighbors from back home! 😀
