When it was announced this summer that Ai Yazawa’s popular fashion manga Paradise Kiss was going to be made into a live action movie adaptation, I was psyched! I’ve read all of Ai Yazawa’s work, and Paradise Kiss is one of the classics that I’ve always loved, along with NANA, Tenshi nanka ja nai, and Gokinjo Monogatari.
There’s always a part of me that worries that live action adaptations of manga and books won’t do the original piece justice, but I was immediately won over when I heard that Kitagawa Keiko and Mukai Osamu were going to be playing the leads. Kitagawa Keiko is one of my favorite actresses, and I think she fits the image of the main character Yukari pretty well. And Mukai Osamu is my latest obsession… seeing that sweet smile of his makes me swoon every time! He’s really come into his own the past couple of years, even though he really hasn’t been in the business very long.
The first teaser for the movie was released yesterday! It’s only 45 seconds long and doesn’t really show a whole lot, but I’m already excited. The movie doesn’t come out in theaters until May 2011 in Japan, and I’ll likely not be able to see it until even later, when it’s available on DVD. Hopefully they’ll keep us on our toes with more trailers and sneak peeks in the coming months!

I know! It’s one of the most anticipated films next year!
Eiji Wentz is too short and wimpy to be George IMO… I think Mukai Osamu was a good choice! 🙂

Yup, he’s always playing the goody two-shoes… haha* I heard that a lot of fans are complaining that George doesn’t have the blue hair and eyes in the movie. It looked good in the manga, but maybe it wouldn’t look as good in real life…

Ha! What timing! I JUST finished re-reading ParaKiss and Gokinjo (I can never seem to read them in chronological order! I always get the craving to read ParaKiss first!) just a few weeks ago. I haven’t really kept up with the adaptations though. Have you seen the anime versions of ParaKiss, Gokinjo, and/or Nana? What about the movie(s)?
Ai Yazawa is one of two manga artists I still keep up with. I was a dumb adolescent when TenNai was in publication and decided not to read it because too many people were OBSESSED with it (i.e. at Japanese school we (were forced to, by one of the other students) put on a production of “Shiraketa Hime” during a camping trip). But after coming around to it, I really saw the appeal and started following her. I even stumbled upon Kagen no Tsuki at a Half Price Books! 😀

I should reread Paradise Kiss, too! It’s been a while. 🙂 I haven’t seen any of the anime versions of any of the series, but I did see the live action movie for NANA. The acting was a little cheesy, but it wasn’t too bad.
Yazawa Ai is the only manga artist that I really follow at all. Other mangas, I just read here and there, but she’s the only one whom I religiously follow all her series. That’s funny you were able to find Kagen no Tsuki at Half Price Books! That one was pretty interesting, too, although I like NANA, ParaKiss and Gokinjo more. 🙂
I heard Yazawa Ai was in the hospital for a while and so the progress of NANA was put on hold for a while. I don’t know if she’s returned yet… I really wonder how the series is going to end!

Aww I didn’t know that! I’ll have to check out those photos! I googled “Totoro pumpkin” to get an idea, and basically chose the simplest one to work with. 🙂

I hope that at least some of the original costumes will be used in the movie, like maybe the blue dress, clothes from Happy Berry, or the black dress that Yukari wore to the party. I think that Eiji Wentz would’ve been a great choice fo George because George gives off the impression of a foreigner but I can’t imagine him being able to give the essence of George. I even thought that instead of Keiko, maybe Becky from “Anna san no Omama” or anyone really pretty with black hair. I personally don’t find Mukai Osamu as attractive as I would Eiji Wentz, Shirota Yu, Mizushima Hiro, or even the guy who played “Makoto-kun” in Hotaru no Hikari. But Mukai-kun definetly fits George.
Lastly, I hope they use George’s car, the 1970 Jaguar!!!

Thanks for commenting! 🙂
You’re definitely right that George gives off an impression of being a foreigner, or at least part Western… Eiji Wentz may have been okay, but I always imagined George having slightly sharper features. I think Mukai Osamu will be able to pull of the sort of cold indifferent expression of George pretty well. 🙂
Yukari is a hard role to cast… but I think she should look very Japanese, so Kitagawa Keiko is a good choice. Other than her, maybe Kuroki Meisa… definitely someone who is considered more of a “cool beauty” rather than sweet and cute.

They need to tell us what clothes they’ll use in the movie! Fans do want to know about the starring actors, which we already know. I am very disappointed in the person they chose to be Tokumori! He is very unatractive. Tokumori is supposed to be handsome and smart! anyway, when you think about Paradise kiss, you think of the fashion! They could at least, release more trailers or even re-open or open more Paradise kiss stores!
