On Wednesday, December 16, Mio’s Pre-K class had their holiday concert! They sang three songs – Hoy es Navidad (the Spanish version of Jingle Bells), I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas, and the American Authors song Best Day Of My Life. Their whole performance was adorable!
Afterwards, we got to enjoy refreshments with Mio at her classroom party.
Dan’s company had a holiday party at the McLean Hilton this year, and it was grand! It’s nice to get dressed up and go somewhere without the kids once in a while, and we thoroughly enjoyed the festivities!
Main course of filet mignon. My favorite part, though, was the ginormous cocktail shrimp they had among the hors d’oeuvres (not pictured). Heaven for a shrimp lover like me!
My favorite kind of bar = a hot chocolate bar! Dan got the Olaf and I got the Elsa and they were both amazing.
Fun in the photobooth ♥
Chocolates from Dan’s company as a gift for him helping them prepare for the party. Yum!
I’m thankful that Dan is such a hardworking husband and father — it’s thanks to him that we can provide for our girls, and we can enjoy company events like these from time to time. His company and his team are so wonderful too, and he loves his work — I’m so happy for him that he found this opportunity that brought us back to the East Coast two years ago.
We got a decent photo with Santa this year! We had only taken Mio to see Santa Claus once before two years ago, and that didn’t end well. We just skipped it last year because she didn’t seem crazy about Santa then either, but this year she has actually been talking about him a lot, maybe because preschool has been hyping him up and partially because she’s able to grasp the idea of him a little better at this age. She’s had only one thing on her Christmas wish list this year (“pink octopus”, a Beanie Baby octopus she saw in a store a couple months ago), and she was determined to tell Santa in person to be certain he knew what to bring her for Christmas. This was Mirei’s first time meeting Santa Claus, of course, and she handled it surprisingly well!
When Mio spotted Santa, she dashed to him, yelling “I WANT PINK OCTOPUS FOR CHRISTMAS!” but I guess he hadn’t planned on having any further conversation with him, so once he sat her on his lap and asked her more questions, she was silent, looking slightly uncomfortable and awkward…
I can just see her thinking, “Did he hear me ask for pink octopus? I have nothing else to say to this man…”
Well, I’m glad that we got at least one photo of Mio smiling with Santa, and although Mirei just looks kind of startled, at least she’s not in tears the way big sister was the first time meeting him!
It’s that time again… for one of our favorite holiday traditions: building and decorating the gingerbread house! I’m finding that it gets more and fun with every year, as Mio becomes more capable and involved in the decorating process… she placed a lot of the candy herself this year, and gave us some art direction! Mirei was asleep this year (probably for the better, since she probably would have tried to wreck our creation) but maybe next year she can help decorate, too!
Getting ready to start the gingerbread house! (Mirei asleep in the background)
I see you eyeing that candy, Mio…
Watching it all come together…
Mio placing the candy all over the house.
She loved being able to do a lot of it herself!
The completed gingerbread house – a collaboration between Mio, Dan and I. I love that it has character!
Mio admiring (read: drooling over) her creation.
In the days since, she’s been asking if she can break off a piece of candy off the house to eat almost daily. Eating it is part of the fun, too! 😉

Hope everyone had a memorable Christmas! We’re spending the holidays quietly at home this year, since my due date is only about a month away now.
Christmas Eve among the “stars”
Mio on Christmas morning – the excitement is palpable.
This was Mio’s third Christmas.
Unwrapping presents.
Look at that smile!
Mio received the most gifts! She seemed kind of overwhelmed after a while.
Her favorite was an educational Anpanman toy from my parents. Once she opened it, she had no eyes for anything else!
Mio with a bug eye viewer from Tarrin and Jason. Thank you to all of our friends who sent gifts for Mio all the way from California — especially Tarrin & Jason, the Pou family, and Aileen!
Christmas Day also happens to be my birthday, and this year I turned 31! We had a delicious dinner with the family (on Christmas Eve we had ham, but Christmas we had Peking duck for dinner — my favorite!), with cake afterwards. Here is Mio helping me blow out my birthday candles! (This is her favorite part of birthdays… she gets pretty upset if you don’t let her participate in blowing them out.)
Thankful to grow another year older with a wonderful husband and this precious girl!
