Dan’s cousin Hideaki (on his mother’s side)Â lives in Thailand, and was visiting San Francisco for a couple days, so we had dinner at Dan’s parents’ house the other night. Dan hadn’t seen his cousin since 1999, so it had been 13 years!

Mio showed off more of her walking skills… she’s getting faster and better at it every day!
Here’s a video Dan took while watching Mio as I was writing up some emails and watching TV — she walked from the living room over to the hallway to him. (Please excuse the mess… we blame Hurricane Mio, who leaves everything in her path in disarray. Plus that I was folding our laundry.)
Today was Mio’s 10-month doctor’s visit — it was a regular checkup, with no vaccinations. As usual, her pediatrician was very impressed with how healthy and physically advanced Mio was in her development. Here are her latest stats!
We were surprised to see that Mio weighed 20 lbs 10 oz, because it’s slightly less than how much she weighed when we took her into the doctor when she was sick a few weeks ago. She’s in the 64th growth percentile based on weight-for-age, continuing to be very healthy!
Mio measured 28.5 inches long, in the 59th growth percentile based on length-for-age.
Her head circumference was 17.99 inches (45.7 cm) around, which is in the 82nd growth percentile based on head circumference-for-age.
Another memorable thing that happened today was that Mio signed her first word — “milk”! We’ve been teaching her baby sign language with a few basic ASL words, as we had heard from other parents that it becomes an effective tool for pre-verbal infants to communicate with gestures when they are ready to communicate but unable to verbally speak words yet. We’d been introducing her to a few signing words for a couple months (such as “more,” “milk,” “Mama,” “Dada,” “yummy,” and “bath”), and today was the first day she signed a word to us! She has been signing it a lot today, and I managed to capture it on video this afternoon:
Some more fun photos from today… Mio is getting better at walking every day, and is now waddling everywhere!
"I'm a superstar!" Walking everywere at only 10 months old.
For about a week now, Mio has been taking little baby steps in an attempt to walk. She typically only takes two or three steps before stumbling down, but tonight she took more steps than she ever had before — and we caught it on video!
Already on your way to walking at 10 months old — Daddy and Mama are so proud of you, Mio!
Mio has a Japanese music book that we’ve let her listen to since she was a newborn — it has pages with lyrics and illustrations to some Japanese children’s songs, and there are buttons that you can press to hear the music play as you look at the pages. (Her favorite song Usagi no Dansu which she used to dance to is in it, too!)
Lately, she’s able to press the buttons herself to play the music, and she starts to clap as the music starts. It tickles me how she only claps the first few moments, and then goes onto press the button again (or another button) before the song even finishes.
Oh Mio, you are more fun to watch than ever! 🙂 Mommy and Daddy can’t get enough of you! ♥
