Two delicious treats in one! I made these for the Nakayoshi Annual BBQ today, but unfortunately a lot of them toppled over in the car and they were a mess when we got there. 🙁 At least I got a couple nice pictures of them beforehand!
Notes for the future: Keep the macaron and cupcake separate until we get to the final destination and top them before serving. Also may not want to use softer frostings like cream cheese frosting, since they have a tendency to not hold the macaron as well.
Dan loves all things coconut, so I made chocolate-dipped coconut macaroons for him as a Father’s Day treat! This was my first time making coconut macaroons, but I found that they were surprisingly easy to make, and require few ingredients. (I hate when I set out to make something and find that there are 20+ ingredients listed — my lazy self is immediately turned off and discouraged by such things.) I’d been feeling under the weather since Saturday evening with a slight fever, congestion, and runny nose, but I was determined not to let my cold get in the way of doing something special for Daddy. They turned out great, and Dan loved them!
Coconut macarons, out of the oven.
Nicely toasted coconut flakes!
Dipped in chocolate for extra yummy goodness!
Look at those beauties!
There was one member of the family who was not happy with the whole experience, though… little Mio is not allowed to have such sweets yet, much to her distress.
“I want themmm!”
She’s never had a chance to try anything like macaroons, but somehow, she knew they were good.
…and that she needed to get her hands on them.
Sorry bubby, only carrots for you!
Dan, on the other hand, was thrilled and very pleased with his treats. Mission accomplished! 😀
Dan made these Golden Grahams treats for me tonight. They’re basically like Rice Krispies Treats, except with Golden Grahams instead of Rice Krispies. SO. GOOD. He used to make them and ship them across the country to me for Valentine’s Day. Now that’s true love!
I just mentioned them the other day and reminiscing about how amazing they tasted, and so he made them for me again when he got back from work today. It was the first time since getting them as Valentine’s Day packages back when we were long distance, so it was quite a treat.
Dan and I pulled out our ice cream maker on Monday to try making some home-churned Earl Grey lavender ice cream. I was craving Ici’s Earl Grey-flavored ice cream, and thought, “why not make it ourselves?” It turned out delicious — we’ll definitely be making it again!

It was gone within a couple minutes!
We used to make gelato, sorbet and ice cream all the time when we first got this ice cream maker three years ago while we were living in Berkeley. I found a few pictures of some of our creations from back then… can’t wait to try making them again!
Chocolate hazelnut gelato... this was one of our favorites!
I had a whole bunch of unused Chinese takeout-style paper containers left over from a design project at the time, and they were perfect for storing our frozen creations. We'd have 5 - 6 flavors at a time in the freezer!
I especially loved making sorbet -- here's a bowl with four flavors of sorbet I had made at the time: kiwi, strawberry, orange, and cantaloupe! Like I said, we went on bit of a sorbet-making spree at the time...
Since having Mio, we got a little lazy and our ice cream maker didn’t get to see much use, but as summer approaches, we hope to pull it more often again! 😀
Today we spent the earlier part of the day at Marina Park in San Leandro, picnicking and BBQ-ing with friends. Here are some pictures and video of all the Memorial Day fun! (We forgot to take our camera, so they’re all from my camera phone, but better than nothing!)
Mio sported some fabulous bell bottoms for the occasion.
I baked green tea cupcakes to bring to the picnic…
Matcha green tea cupcakes with green tea frosting.
Eating at the picnic table.
Mio chowing down on some watermelon.
Good food and good company!
As usual, Mio had a grand time on the swing.
JinWoo was pushing around his toy car, when Mio (in her typical bossypants fashion) hopped onto the seat. Luckily, JinWoo was a good sport and pushed her around the picnic area, taking Mio for a joyride. It was quite a cute sight for everyone to see!
Ohhh I can't take the cuteness!
Of course, the adults had to chase them around to prevent some potentially dangerous crashes…
They're such cute friends! Thank you JinWoo for pushing Mio around!
I’m sad that the long weekend is already coming to an end, but I’m glad that we could spend it in good company with friends! 😀
