Dan turned 27 this past weekend! The hubby’s birthday was on Sunday (December 13), but we celebrated early on Friday night with friends at our apartment. Thank you to everyone who came out to the party and crammed into our little Berkeley apartment to revel with us!
On Sunday,Dan’s family invited us over for lunch to have a joint celebration of Dan’s birthday and my birthday (which is on Christmas Day, later this month). Dan’s mother whipped up a feast of sashimi, galbi, and homemade chocolate cake topped with buttercream and cherries. It was the proverbial “cherry on top” for a memorable birthday weekend for Dan. 🙂
I love the end of the year because of all the occasions that bring people together — holiday parties, bÅnenkai’s, Christmas, New Years Eve… what better way to celebrate the past year than with family and friends? December is always full of festivities and although it’s often the busiest and craziest time of year, I always look forward to it! 😀
Last Friday was our first holiday party of the year. We got together with a bunch of our couple friends, and kicked off the holiday season with a lovely gala dinner and dance. Huge thanks to Kazue for organizing and Eunha for the gorgeous decorations. The food was delicious, the ambience was warm, and everyone looked stunning! After dinner, we had a little dance lesson in which we learned the foxtrot (a follow-up to the swing dancing lesson from Valentine’s Day) — I thought it was easier to master than a lot of the swing steps, and soon everyone was gliding across the dance floor. As the night progressed, the tone of the music changed and we started seeing some breakdancing and moonwalking… haha* Hopefully Michael Jackson wasn’t turning in his grave!
It was a lovely night with good company, and I’m getting even more excited about all the other celebrations to come this month.
There’s something about weddings that I just can’t get enough of. Being there to celebrate the love of two people who love each other is always enough to spring tears to my eyes, but what I also love is all the creativity that comes out of the couples. A recent trend that I absolutely love is the surprise wedding dance — where the couple’s slow dance suddenly breaks into a high-energy choreographed dance routine. It seems like it’s only really caught on in the past couple years, but YouTube is already swarming with videos of them!
My childhood friend Marie (or Moe-chan, as I knew her in Japanese Saturday School) was married to her husband Colin on September 26th in Washington, DC. Marie, our friend Erri and I all knew each other since first grade and were inseparable through middle school at nihongo-gakkou. I can’t believe that now the three of us are all married! (Erri, being the first to tie the knot, already has an adorable two-year-old.) I wasn’t at their wedding, but I just discovered through Marie’s Facebook their awesome surprise wedding dance. They got the whole bridal party involved. Here is the video. (The two-minute mark is where you want to be!)
Though it pales in comparison to Marie & co.’s dance, Dan and I broke into our own rendition of Michael Jackson’s The Way You Make Me Feel during our first dance to Endless Love at our wedding, over a year ago. We practiced for more than a month, but they hadn’t been dress rehearsals, so I found it a lot more difficult to move in a wedding dress during the actual performance! A bit embarrassing, but it was still a hit with our guests. (Watch our video here)
For anyone looking for a way to shake up a wedding and stray from the snore-fest that is often the traditional first dance, surprise dances are a fun alternative. There are plenty of ideas on YouTube — ours was inspired by this couple (who are much better than our rhythmically-challenged selves, I might add), with some alterations here and there. It’s sure to invite laughs and tumultuous applause from your guest.
One of my good friends from college came to visit this past weekend. Mimi is a couple years older than me and has always been like the older sister I never had — when I kept getting sick freshman year, she always brought over soup or jello to help me feel better, and she would frequently invite me over for yummy home-cooked Korean meals. After she graduated, I hadn’t had many chances to see her, and it’s even harder to meet up now that we’re on opposite coasts. The last time I’d seen her was over a year ago, at my wedding. This time, Mimi and her friend Cindy decided to take a trip out here for a little over a week to go hiking and camping around Yosemite and Tahoe, making stops at Santa Cruz and Monterey along the way. They arrived on Friday night and spent Saturday with us before embarking on the rest of their Northern California adventure Sunday morning.
I’m always uncertain about where to take friends when they visit the area, since for having lived out here for two years, I still don’t know the area too well, especially San Francisco. But Mimi made things super easy for me because she did a whole bunch of research and talking to Bay Area natives back in Richmond, Virginia before she flew out. When she got here, she had a whole list of places to go and things to eat before I even had to come up with suggestions. She’s been to the city before, so she knew the streets of San Francisco much better than I did!
We spent a good amount of time in both Berkeley and San Francisco on Saturday, making it a full day. It was fun being a tourist in our own city! Here are some photos…
Breakfast at Bette's Oceanview Diner in Berkeley
corned beef hash and cream scone... a satisfying start to the day.
pie in the sky: a giant pie hanging from the ceiling
reunited with Meems!
Indian Rock in Berkeley... never heard of it until Mimi told me about it.
Enjoying breathtaking views of the bay from Indian Rock.
The ladies on Indian Rock! (It was rough scaling that rock in a dress.)
Big thanks to Mimi for telling us about this place!
Cindy and Mimi meet Diesel for the first time.
Ice cream stop at Ici.
Enjoying refreshing treats from Ici... my current favorite is the raspberry lemon ice cream sandwich, flanked by gingersnaps.
Driving in the Russian Hills in San Francisco.
The zigzagging roads of Lombard Street. This was actually my first time there! I've always wanted to see it.
Visiting friends always want to stop by the Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park.
obligatory Japanese bridge photo.
Dry-fried chicken wings from San Tung on Irving Street.
They were seriously the best chicken wings I've had in my entire life.
Shrimp and leek dumplings... delicious.
Spicy seafood noodle soup (Cham Pong) - pretty hot but soooo good.
Back in Berkeley, finishing off the day with bubble tea from Tapioca Express in downtown.

Dan and I had a great time with the girls (although Dan only accompanied us for the Berkeley portion of our adventures), and we wish them a safe and memorable trip around NorCal before they return to the East Coast.
I just wanted to take a moment to wish the happiest of birthdays to two of the most important, irreplaceable ladies in my life, who happen to share the same birthday, on July 27th.
One of them is my loving mother, who has always been a constant support for me, whether near or far… continually encouraging me to follow my dreams and believe in myself:
The other one is none other than my best friend of twelve years — Debbie. I recently found a blog post from her xanga which I didn’t know still existed, and in an entry that was written almost a year ago (and I hope she doesn’t mind me sharing this here), she writes:
I’m obviously biased, but Misono and Dan’s wedding was simply the most beautiful, elegant, and intimate wedding I’ve ever had the pleasure of attending and their slideshow was just icing on the proverbial cake. I teared a little watching Misono’s part of the slideshow– watching her life flash by in a series of photos made me realize just how much of my own life Misono’s been a part of. There’s my life before Misono (B.M.) and after Misono (A.M.). And the latter has been all the more enriched in simply knowing her.
Reading her entry for the first time nearly a year after it was written brought tears to my eyes — I have always considered myself the lucky one to not only have such a caring, beautiful, smart, witty, all-around wonderful person in my life, but to be able to call her my best friend. Part of me finds it hard to believe that I’ve known Debbie for almost half of my life now, but another part of me can’t really remember any memories that don’t involve her in some way. In my fondest memories, in the moments in my life that really shine among the others, she was always a part of them — whether actively involved in them or quietly supporting me from behind and waiting with flowers and a warm hug afterwards. From high school antics to going to our first college party, to surviving our first year at Tech together, to culture shows and graduations, she has always been there. Even after she graduated two years before me, she made the five hour trip down to come see me whenever I had a culture show or some other big event. Debbie has a place in my heart that no one else — not even Dan — can fill; I think that is what makes a best friend so irreplaceable. It’s my life that has been all the more enriched by her presence, and so it is with deep gratitude that I celebrate the fact that she was brought into the world on this day, 26 years ago. Love you bestest!
